Our current U.S. Secretary of Defense, General James Mattis has enough motivation to fire up an entire fleet Marine Corps without even saying a single Oorah!  When the man speaks, he speaks volumes of wisdom.

Whenever I’m feeling a little lazy, a little bent out of shape, a little like I got some sand in my…    I remember where I came from and where I am going.  I quit whining, I get fired up, and I get motivated.  Sticking to my roots in the Marine Corps is a continual motivating factor so listening to men like General Mattis inspires me to be better everyday.

If you want to learn how to be a leader, General Mattis is a man worth listen to and reading about.

These are 8 of my favorite quotes from USMC General “Mad Dog” Mattis that fires me the hell up when it comes to self improvement (I threw a bonus quote at the very end), enjoy:

  1. “Nothing can stop us, we don’t take refuge in self-pitty.”

  2. “You are not paid to have a mid-life crisis, or ask people to get you through a mid-life crisis, you are paid to give the enemy a mid-life crisis.”

  3. “There are hunters and there are victims. By your discipline, cunning, obedience and alertness, you will decide if you are a hunter or a victim.”

  4. “When times get tough, the Marines get tougher.”

  5. “The most important six inches on the battlefield is between your ears.”

  6. “Earning the respect of your subordinates is critical; you have to earn that every day. You’re not going to win any fights as a leader; your troops are going to win those fights.”

  7. “Be polite be professional, but a have a plan to kill everybody you meet.”

  8. “Somebody on the other side is watching, hoping that you are not at the top of your game, that you are not reading that you are not working out, that you are not strong spiritually.  Then they are going to think they’ve got you.  You want to always be the toughest, the sharpest out there.”

I believe everyone can and should be a leader for good.  That is, be a person that inspires other people to do good and be better.

Being a leader isn’t about being the “boss.”  No one likes a boss.  No one likes a baby sitter either and in our society, it seems baby sitters for adults are on the rise.  Everyone wants to protect the sensitivities of everyone but very few people want to take initiative to make the hard decisions that propel our civilization to glory and when someone does, the fearful people around them rarely back them. Our only solution for someone that doesn’t “behave” or “conform” is punishment a la Marxism.

As a result, we have millions of people living under terror and rather than do something about it, we have entire governments and organizations dedicated to coddling behavior that promotes victim-hood and dependence, rather than freedom, responsibility, and self-reliance.

Freedom, courage, and self-reliance is what America was founded on, so let’s not lose our heritage and our roots.  Let’s find some motivation, bitch less, and inspire more.

Get fired the hell up and piss someone off for the better, Oorah!

BONUS General Mattis quote:

“Power point makes us stupid.”

Reason being: It stifles discussion, critical thinking and thoughtful decision-making.
